Abstract

This study examines institutional control and restrictions on individual freedom in the novel “1984” by George Orwell from a literary sociology perspective. The objectives are to identify forms of institutional control, analyse how institutional structures limit individual autonomy and social justice, and explain the relevance of these issues in modern society. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach. The primary data source consists of selected chapters from the novel, while the data include dialogues, narratives, and events related to surveillance, ideological control, truth manipulation, resistance, and freedom restrictions. Data were collected using the observe-and-record method and analysed through the interactive analysis model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal that institutional control is carried out through technological surveillance, ideological influence, psychological domination, and manipulation of historical truth. These mechanisms gradually reduce individual autonomy, freedom of expression, rationality, and privacy. The study concludes that the novel portrays the power of totalitarian institutions in controlling both social behaviour and human thought, making it a relevant social critique of modern society.
